How Mother’s Day Was Established
The modern Mother's Day in the United States emerged in the early 20th century, though festivals honoring mothers existed in ancient cultures. The contemporary observance grew from organized efforts to recognize maternal devotion and to promote peace and public health.
Key figures shaped its rise. Ann Reeves Jarvis of West Virginia led Mothers’ Day Work Clubs in the 1850s to improve sanitation and support soldiers on both sides during the Civil War. Julia Ward Howe issued her 1870 “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” calling women to champion peace. Most pivotal was Ann’s daughter, Anna Jarvis, who organized the first official service on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia, and in Philadelphia to commemorate her mother’s legacy.
Momentum followed quickly. By 1909, many states held observances. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day nationwide. Churches, civic groups, and later commercial channels helped spread the holiday internationally, establishing a dedicated day to appreciate mothers and to say “Happy Mother’s Day” across communities large and small.
